Happiness. A good source
of it...My favorite place in the world. I knew it like the back of my hand.
Smiling as we approached
it, I absent-mindedly fished for my Chapstick in my jeans pocket. To my horror,
I found nothing. I quickly checked my bag." Where is my Chapstick?"
"Calm down, Sarah, geeze,"
Julie muttered, not wanting me to make a scene. As if I would do that.
"It's okay, I bet they sell
it here, you won't die!" Jenny added, grinning at me in my misfortune.
I glared at them; they couldn't know what a dire strait I was in.
"Fine, fine, sorry, I guess
I'll live. Let's just get through the gates sanely..." My friends nodded in
agreement as Jenny fished out some coupons. She handed them to the impatient
lady behind the glass door.
"Do you want any Disney
dollars with that? Just Disneyland or California Adventure tickets as well?"
she sighed, irritated.
"She's been in there too
long," Julie mumbled to me as Jenny kindly said no to the Disney dollars,
and the sister park, and received our tickets.
Jenny walked in front, wearing
her favorite white shorts and cute blue T-shirt. Her black hair almost glistened,
probably just washed last night, sitting perfectly in the half-pony-tail-bun
she had placed it in. Her brown eyes were glimmering with excitement and
her smile made her dimples show. You could tell she was good at athletics
by just looking at her. Julie was wearing jean shorts and her purple-striped
T-shirt. Her black hair glistened too as it hung loose around her shoulders.
Her tan skin showed up well in the morning sun as she walked along. Though
she was not fond of exercise, she had been blessed with an incredible metabolism.
I followed, feeling odd in my Old Navy jeans and baseball tee. Oh well,
there's no way in hell I'm wearing shorts and a tanktop, I thought.
I noticed some girls, maybe
in their early twenties, walk by. Both were drop dead gorgeous, and this fact
easily annoyed me. Not so much annoyed, but ate me up. They walked by, perfect
in their white tank tops that stopped above their belly buttons, and dark
blue high-cut shorts, revealing their to-die-for-figures. "If only..." my
wish trailed off; I switched back to reality, silently cursing myself for
always wanting to be something that I could never be.
We headed towards the gates.
As we walked through the gates, I noticed the familiar musical sound that
was set off. We looked around; it wasn't too crowded...odd. We thought there'd
be more tourists, but then again, it was February. Summer was the usual killer...Oh
well, we weren't complaining.
"Well, whatcha wanna do
first?" Jenny asked, attempting to open the always oddly folded map to Disneyland.
"Argh, these things are sooo impossible! Open easily, please" she begged the
map.
"It's okay," I assured her.
"I've got the whole park map in my head, dear," I motioned, tapping my forehead.
"Oh sure, just brag
about it!" Julie commented. I pretended to ignore her.
We walked down Main Street
to notice a rope at the end, preventing access to any of the 'lands' and their
rides. "Oh, wonderful, just what we need, no RIDES, ugh!" Jenny exclaimed.
"They'll let us through
at 9AM. That's how they get us to buy more stuff. People show up early, and
get stuck by the shops and food, get bored, and end up spending money," I
said, sort of matter-of-factly. Julie rolled her eyes. "What!?" I returned.
I just got a sigh from her.
"Ooo! An arcade!!" Jenny
ran off.
"C'mon," Julie instructed,
"We'd better take care of the youngin who's on a sugar high," she snickered
and pulled me.
"Yeah, the YOUNG ONE" I yelled to
get Jenny's attention, but was unsuccessful.
We finally found her going crazy with a game; she kept feeding
it quarters intent on getting a high score.
"C'mon!" she wailed at it,
"that way, no that way, ergh, that way!" she muttered to the image representing
her on the screen.
I sighed and decided to
actually spend money. A horoscope machine caught my eye, and I walked to
it. I did as it instructed, placing my hand in the picture, and punching
in 'Pisces' for my sign. It clicked and clacked and made some noise, then
spit out a small card supposedly telling me what the hand marks meant and
what was in store for me for the next few days. I laughed at the info about
my hand, it must be off, that's not me at all. Outgoing? A flirt? Nuh-uh,
no way, not me...though sometimes I wish I were, I thought. I looked
at the other side, my events for the next few days: you will strengthen bonds
with otherwise soon distant friends, while making a few more too. To add
to friendship, possibly down the road slight hopes may be filled, possibly
'killing two birds with one stone'. "Now what was that supposed to mean?"
I wondered out loud.
Giving up on what I convinced
myself was a crazy card, I sauntered back over to Jenny's game. She was really
getting into it. I had to admit she was good. Julie was also paying attention
now, cheering her on.
"Noo! I need quarters...Sarah,
Julie, NOW!!!!" Jenny screamed looking at us frantically "I've got 20 seconds,
c'mon!!" she pleaded. I searched through my backpack, but there were none,
same with Julie. "Change machine!" Jenny screamed frantically pointing in
its direction, not wanting to leave her seat. I dashed to it and fumbled with
a dollar bill, but the stupid machine wouldn't take it.
"Here, use these for now,"
a tall guy with sunglasses and a hat handed me four quarters. With 6 seconds
left, and Jenny freaking out, I said a quick "thanks" and ran back over, jamming
the quarters into the stupid machine.
"YES!" Jenny yelled, and
she continued to play, calm now.
"Damn, shouldn't you save
that hectic energy for when you're really in trouble?" I mumbled, Julie agreed.
"Oh, but I WAS in trouble"
Jenny giggled back, her eyes glued to the screen.
"Great, we're gonna spend
all day AND all of our money in the arcade of Disney land," Julie stated.
With the mention of money,
I remembered I had borrowed some from a guy, and turned around to find him
right behind me.
"Whoa, you scared me!" I
told him, and he smiled 'sorry'.
"Well, here's a dollar in
exchange for the quarters, thanks again. Though my friend wasn't in a TRUE
emergency..." I added loud enough for Jenny to hear.
"Was too!" she defensively
returned, her attention still on the screen.
"Oh, it's okay, I'm used
to it," he answered. I looked up at him, arching an eyebrow, confused at his
last comment. He was about 6'1 and I could see he was well built though he
had on a baggy gray 'phat farm' shirt on, baggy jeans, Vans shoes, and of
course, the sunglasses and hat I had noticed before.
"Yo, Train, money, like,
NOW!" I heard a yell from a game across the aisle. In front of it there sat
a body, back to me, with a baggy white shirt, jeans, and topped off with a
blond head with dark glasses and a cap on. Around him stood 3 more guys, all
backs to us, all with hats and dark glasses too.
Julie tapped me. "Sarah,
um, am I seeing things...?" she whispered, her voice not stable.
Then it hit me. "Holy..."
I whispered back, unable to speak any longer.
