During the next
few weeks, Chin, Cathy, Jenny, and I were going crazy with Lance and
Nick calling every day...Julie and Hannah refused to talk to them. They never
picked up the phone anymore, in fear of it being one of the guys. One rainy
day, Cathy got plain fed up with it all. She marched into Hannah's room,
where Julie was most of the time, after two sequential phone calls from Nick
and Lance.
"Do you plan to
live like this forever!?" she asked them in an annoyed tone. They
looked up from their reading.
"W-what?" Julie asked.
"Being stubborn
is getting you two nowhere--"
"We're not being
stubborn," Hannah cut in.
"Just because you
two THINK you are going though hell doesn't mean that they, or the rest of
the inhabitants of this house for that matter, have to suffer with you. Don't
tell us of your pain anymore. I for one am sick of it..." Cathy was getting
more annoyed by the second. "Fine if you broke up with them! But quit sulking,
dammit! Stop thinking coulda woulda shoulda..." Cathy was getting mad. The
two girls were speechless. "Don't ignore them. Talk to them! You owe them
that! Can't you just quit sitting in that damn pity pot of yours for one
second and act mature!?" Her voice was getting louder. "You can't just ignore
them if they call every damn day! Can't you see that they freakin' care about
you? You can't turn into friggin hermits because your hearts were bruised!"
She paused, observing Hannah and Julie's shocked faces. She sighed,
"It may seem like I'm overreacting, but then so are you two! You both were
with them for a seriously SHORT amount of time when it comes to serious relationships...and
here you sit sulking every single day! I've had enough..." Getting that off
her chest, Cathy stormed out of the room. The two were stunned and silent.
Jenny and I were in our room and heard the yelling. We poked our heads into
the hallway to catch Cathy coming out of Hannah's room. She ran into Chin.
"Kat? What's wrong?"
Chin asked. Cathy saw Jenny and me from our room, and Hannah and Julie, who
stood in the doorway of Hannah's room.
"I think Kezia needs
a walk right now," she said in a huff and ran down the stairs.
"But Cathy it's--"
I called out and then heard the door slam, "--raining."
Julie and Hannah
had worried looks on their faces. "I'm sorry..." Julie whispered.
"Me too..." Hannah
looked at her feet.
"This all would
have never happened had we not gone to Disneyland..." Jenny muttered.
"Now don't you start,"
Chin told her.
"Why can't you guys
just talk to them?" I asked.
"We're afraid,"
Julie said.
"We'll break down
before we can speak," Hannah said.
"Why is this such
a big deal?" I asked. "I know I'm not sounding nice, but they are just guys,
and you weren't with them for that long a time..."
"Special guys,"
Julie sniffled.
"It may look like
we're overreacting, I know, like Kat said...but I can't explain it," Hannah
sighed.
"Look, if you can't
talk to them over the phone or in person, why not use the internet?" Jenny
suggested.
"Yeah!" Chin agreed.
"You can use ICQ
or IM...your pick," I told them. They looked at each other for a moment and
looked back at us. They sighed and nodded. They looked a little relieved
from having the option to not have to hear the guy's voice nor to have them
hear their voice...or their expressions for that matter--especially their
crying if they did break down. We heard a clap of thunder and saw some lightning.
"I'm gonna go look for Cathy..." I muttered and ran downstairs and out the
door.
She was sitting
in the park all alone on the bench hugging her knees in the pouring rain.
"Cathy!" I called
out. She looked up. I ran over to her. "You need to get home! Where's
Kezia?"
"I didn't bring
her," Cathy admitted as I helped her up. When we got home I shoved her into
the bathroom and told her to take a hot shower while I ran to get her some
clothes. The others stayed out of our way, afraid of how angry Cathy still
might be. When she was done and changed I made her get to bed. She was sniffling.
She had a fever.
